Why should I address my dental needs before becoming pregnant?

Dr. Virginia Elizabeth suggests that if you're thinking of becoming pregnant, you should take care of all your dental needs before getting pregnant. This is because you don't know how you're going to feel when you're pregnant. Some people experience fatigue or severe pregnancy nausea, which can make it difficult to undergo dental procedures. Moreover, you can't predict if you will have a complicated pregnancy, which might also affect your dental care.

What should my dental care routine be like if I'm already pregnant?

If you're already pregnant, it's recommended to get a dental cleaning once every three months. This is due to the fact that pregnancy hormones can cause your gums to swell. If you do not clean your gums properly or if you wait too long to get them cleaned, they will not go back down until after you have the baby or stop nursing. If you need dental treatment, it should ideally be scheduled for the second or third trimester, unless you have a dental emergency, such as an infection or accident.

How should I manage my dental care after having a baby?

After having a baby, you're likely to have less time to visit the dental office. Therefore, if you need treatment, it's advisable to get it done while you're pregnant. Another factor to consider is your baby's feeding schedule. If you're a nursing mom, it's ideal to learn your baby's nursing schedule and have your dental visit right after a feeding. This ensures that the baby isn't hungry during your visit and you can have a peaceful dental appointment.

Recap

To recap, ensure you get your dental cleanings done once every three months while you're pregnant. If possible, try to get all your dental treatment done before you're pregnant. If you're already pregnant, schedule treatments for the second and third trimester. Lastly, figure out your baby's feeding schedule to plan your dental or any medical appointments accordingly. This advice is not only for women but also for men, as they can share this information with their partners.
