What to Expect During a Dental Exam at Virginia H. Ellis, DDS Dental Corp.
Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?
It's because we can help you keep your teeth, avoid pain, and stay comfortable while also looking good. We catch dental cavities and gum disease before you're even aware of them. By doing so, we help you keep your teeth. We also look for things like oral cancer.
People don't often think about us looking for cancer in the head and neck region, but I've caught skin cancer in those areas for several patients. Sometimes, you can catch it in the mouth, and early detection can turn a life-threatening event into a successful outcome. Essentially, it's to save your gums and prevent unnecessary work that will cost you more later on in terms of expense and time.
What is included in a dental exam?
When you come in, we usually review your medical history. We examine the inside of your mouth, conduct a head and neck exam to rule out any cancer possibilities, and check your gums. We review x-rays, perform your dental and gum cleanings, and provide you with tips. We inform you of our findings and advise you on what you can do at home to improve your oral health.
What types of recommendations might come from a dental exam?
Recommendations could include immediate treatments for cavities, cracked teeth, or possibly root canals. We also give daily oral hygiene recommendations to help you feel more comfortable. It could be as simple as advising on how to handle bad breath, which can be a significant social issue for many people.
How long does a full exam take?
If you're a patient of record in a dental practice, it generally takes about 45 to 60 minutes. This depends on whether you need x-rays, if you need to update your medical history, and the complexity of your mouth.
For new patients, it usually takes about an hour and a half to two hours. The duration also depends on how quickly you complete the paperwork, if you arrive on time, if you find parking, and the amount of existing work in your mouth. For similar cases, it's usually shorter, about an hour and a half.
For returning patients, it typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. You're usually done in about an hour.
Are dental exams painful?
Generally, no, unless you have very inflamed gums. Remember, we can always numb you. That's why you should come in every 3 to 6 months.
